The Incredible Shrinking Turtles

Episode 7

It’s time to get settled into what the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have become.  The cartoonish mild nature of the show really debuts strongly with this episode.  I did find it fairly amusing as far as the humor is concerned.  Once you can accept the silliness it’s not too bad to watch.  Let’s put it this way if Bugs Bunny made an appearance it wouldn’t be a far stretch.  This is the start of a four episode long series about an alien power that has fallen to earth.  I do enjoy the connecting episodes up to this point.  It’s as if there is one long story but it gets broken down into individual portions.  Will that last though, we can only hope.

Mutant turtles and aliens, does it get any better?
The turtles are practicing their fighting techniques in a park, in broad daylight.  The ninja part of their name is blatantly ignored here, stealth, invisibility.  They don’t even war disguises.  Luckily this park is entirely empty on such a beautiful day, highly unlikely.  Michelangelo dresses up as Shredder and the others take him down when he attacks them.  Leonardo was totally shocked to discover it was his brother!  The green skin and orange bands didn’t give it away Leonardo?  All of a sudden an alien spaceship crashes into the park pond.  The military or media fail to respond or report on it.  I’m actually glad the military never showed, it can rally become stereotypical in a show when that occurs.  However April covering the mysterious landing would be an excellent way to include her into the episode more properly.  The turtles save this little guy from the bottom of the pond and bring him ashore.  Michelangelo thinks he looks weird so Donatello zings back with he probably thinks the same about you.  The alien is dying; perhaps oxygen is destroying his lungs?  It could be a million things for something not of this planet.  I have to admit my inner science fiction self is really liking the alien presence here.  The alien gives the turtles an alien crystal converger to track down and collect the three fragments of the eye of Zarnov.  What was this alien up to?  The alien claims the eye of Zarnov, when all together, is the most powerful force our planet would know.  To be transporting something of that magnitude is insane!    The little alien dies and vaporizes on the spot.  It’s apparent he died I suppose.

The man looks unstable Baxter.
Shredder was being a true ninja and spy by hiding in the nearby shrubs listening to the whole conversation.  He is salivating over the idea of all that power.  If he gets that eye of Zarnov he could break free of Krang and have his own power.  Why was he there though?  I’d guess he has nothing better to do anyway considering the disposal of the turtles is all he thinks about.  He later contacts Krang with Baxter.  Baxter is eating an ice cream cone as Shredder forces him to hold the communicator while he speaks.  You can’t hold it yourself Shredder?  I suppose that’s why you have underlings to do the most frivolous tasks.  It’s really because he wouldn’t be able to use his arms to emphasize his points as well.  Krang isn’t impressed with this story of the eye of Zarnov and its supposed unlimited power.  He also probably smells some BS from Shredder to trick him into sending him his army.  Krang wants results and denies Shredder his foot soldiers.  Would those crappy robots really help much anyway?

Less pizza and more practice turtles, come on!
The turtles get right to the chase of locating the crystal fragments.  Don’t they usually consult with Splinter about these big discoveries first though?  I remember they have previously always done that, perhaps they are breaking free of their master a bit?  The crystal converger leads them to some dock.  Shredder is following them at this time.  The fragment is on a garbage barge so the turtles hop in it.  Donatello however gets pulled into it forcibly by the crystal converger.  It seems when it gets close enough it acts like a magnet of sorts.  The turtles seemed a bit unwilling to search in the garbage, you live in a sewer come on, and the smells can’t be that different!  As they find it, Shredder swiftly swings in and steals it.  At last the turtles and Shredder fight it out as Shredder wins the contest handily.  The turtles weren’t sharp I’ll say that much.  Shredder says, “So much for the free ninja lesson.”  I love that one, a great insult on the dominance of the battle by Shredder.  He aims the fragment at the turtles and they shrink.  He is unable to finish them off as they scurry away.  He tries but just fails so I was pleased to see that.  I hate when he doesn’t when the chance is right there.

Seriously Splinter, shower much? Whew!
The turtles make it back to the sewer den and inform Splinter of the situation, sparing no small detail ha-ha!  Splinter drags April into this although I’m not sure as to why, perhaps to be his driver?  Get your driving license Splinter!  They had to go to the docks to get the turtle van though since the turtles were forced to abandon it there.  That’s not shown however, they are just driving around in it suddenly looking for Shredder.  Meanwhile Shredder is shrinking buildings all over the city and collecting them up to impress his alien cohort Krang.  When he shows Krang his toy building collection it again fails to impress Krang.  He wants the turtles as proof not buildings.  Krang probably gets annoyed at Shredder doing everything except what he told him.  I still enjoy the lack of trust and bad spirits the two villains show to one another.  Baxter creates a cockamamie device called “Heat seeking Turtle Scope”.  It can track down the specific turtles they are looking for.  That’s insanely brilliant and to think a wacko invented it just now!

Bite sized turtle snacks!
The turtles are shrinking faster than a cheap pair of underwear according to Raphael.  They get forced out of the sewers by rushing water.  They drift on a soap bar until they go down a storm drain that sends them into a pond area.  A fish nearly eats them but Baxter nets them.  Super impossibly efficient that he was in a boat to catch them in that situation.  Baxter you’d think would kill them for the past grievances they bestowed him but he returns them to Shredder instead.  Shredder puts them into a jar with air holes.  He wants to keep them alive to show Krang.  It’s clear his motives of just destroying the turtles have changed to simply getting his foot soldiers and other technologies back to earth.  I don’t quite agree that’s the best path to be on but at least you can see why he doesn’t want to kill them immediately anymore.

I gun smash you good!
Splinter gets his psychic on as he senses the turtles nearby, he is quite adamant about the connection between teacher and student.  I’m glad in school I never had that going on with my teachers.  I wouldn’t want them knowing where I was 24/7, kind of weird.  They burst into the hideout Shredder is at and start the rescue.  Just before they did that Shredder was holing a crow bar, wow he resorts to that, ready to smash the turtles with a sickening Krang watching through the communicator.  I love the crow bar Shredder has; he’s like a common thug without Krang’s help.  No wonder he is so desperate to please that brain blob.  Splinter and Shredder tangle while delivering some odd dialogue.  It’s mainly Splinters counter verbal assault of “One who wears a metal mask shouldn’t use the word rusty.”  Huh?

The laws of physics say that..
April doesn’t even have a camera but must not be worried about a story in all this, why not?!  Look at all this crazy stuff, an alien fragment, a giant rat righting a kitchen utensil, it’s all 6 o’clock news material.  She used to be so obsessed about getting her stories!  She finds the fragment on the ground, Shredder must have dropped it in the battle, aims it at the turtles and they return to their former sizes.  The breaking out of the jar was a bit awkward though, it was like rubber glass!  Baxter and Shredder take off down a passageway and Splinter stops the turtles.  Shredder also snatched the fragment off the ground, so I guess April threw it down once the turtles were their size again, why?  Imagine the power April!  Perhaps she was afraid she would shrink as well, who knows.  Splinter should have asked the turtles did they really want to shrink again if they caught up to Shredder.

Splinter at the end surprises the turtles with bite sized pizzas.  I wonder why Michelangelo didn’t notice the weight difference when he was carrying them.  Well he isn’t the smartest turtle now is he?  It’s a good funny ending actually and this episode is decent enough not to be overlooked.  It’s rather funny and often enough to make you crack a laugh.  It’s silly but that’s expected at this point in the series.

Return of the Shredder

Episode 6
We are now in season two and it’s easy to notice.  The drawing style has changed to a more light-hearted feel from the previous season.  It’s not enough to abandon watching the show but I always preferred season one in nearly all aspects so it takes a moment to adjust to what I’ll be viewing for awhile.  Season two has a total of 13 episodes and this first one starts off well enough.  It manages to keep an overall funny sense of humor as well.

Let's kick their @$$! -Leonardo
Leonardo and Michelangelo are doing grocery shopping in their standard trench coat disguises.  I’ll refrain from the “it’s obvious their not humans” remarks as you have to accept the disguises they’ll wear as we move forward in the series.  A couple of thugs try to rob the cashier lady when the turtles decide to take matters into their own hands.  They rip off their disguises and charge the thugs!  I wonder why they took off their clothes.  I know I always do when I’m trying to prevent a public crime.  It usually throws off the perpetrator you’re dealing with.  At one point Michelangelo gives a powerful gust of breath toward one of the thugs that topples a bunch of drinks forward onto him.  Mutant turtles must have a powerful set of lungs, it’s silly though and a bit much.  Leonardo makes a mess slicing open egg cartons all over another thug.  Why were eggs on display stacked up near the front of the store?  Aren’t they usually in a cooling storage area of some kind?  The two turtles tie up the thugs and flee since the police are on the way.  I suppose the goofy cashier lady hit a silent alarm.  The turtles sure are weary of being seen by the police, what did you guys do?  Would they really arrest you for foiling a robbery?  It might be the ninja stealth techniques of invisibility.  The cashier lets them leave with the groceries for free since she claims they saved her life and Michelangelo steals the shopping cart as well.

A small parting gift
April shows up to get the scoop on the scene and finds out that two turtles, or alligators, saved her.  She tries hard to show the turtles are the good guys.  Let’s jump over to dimension X where Shredder is begging Krang to send him back to earth.  Krang being sick of Shredder finally does just to be rid of the baby.  Bebop and Rocksteady assume they’re going to but slam back as the portal closes.  Krang explains he loves to see humans and animals suffer what a freak.  Since Bebop and Rocksteady are both they’re screwed basically.  The toughness and voice of these two has changed to a “dumbed” down version from season one.  Hopping back to earth at channel 6 April tries to convince her boss, Burne Thompson, the turtles are not crooks.  However the boss is being manipulated by a fox named Tiffany who hates turtles.  It’s sad for him but rather funny actually.

Irma is a new character in the show now and has a brief run in with April before she talks with Burne.  Irma mentions she broke a nail and it’s a disaster.  Why?  Well she adds what if a hunk calls me for a date?  It’s obvious from the get go she is desperately seeking men.  To further this after April storms off stating something about “Bigfoot”.  Irma shouts to her to find out if he’s married if she finds him.  What the?  Irma you’re incredibly hopeless, how embarrassing.

Shredder seems irritated fellas
Michelangelo and Leonardo, back in the sewer den, share how simple it was dispatching the thugs they encountered with Raphael adding he wished he could have helped.  Raphael is always looking to go at it, he even states he wants to take Shredder one on one.  I would like to see that!  Splinter shouts all of their names and informs them he feels that Shredder has returned.  Splinter sure has a psychic aura to him doesn’t he?  Shredder arrives in a park and runs into a couple of thugs.  He intimidates the crap out of them by doing an incredible leap up onto a tree branch some ten feet up then chops it off with his metal claws. Obviously he was not taking them seriously enough or he could of just killed them right?  Would the world miss two petty thugs?  Shredder contacts Krang with a communicator he now uses that is handheld.  Krang informs him that he is on his own now and won’t get a shred of help from him.  Krang has a wicked sense of humor this episode.  He also states Shredder needs to prove his worth if he will get any help.

Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang in action
Shredder has a hair brain idea to take over the “Slash for Cash dojo” and train a bunch of worthless fighters to commit crimes in turtle outfits.  The leaders name is Slash and it would be cool if he later was the mutant Slash that enters the show.  However that’s for a much later episode.  It doesn’t seem he trained them for too long but they robbed enough banks and such to make the news.  April contacts the turtles to come check out the video tape of one robbery.  They jump from the turtle blimp they came on from the balloon part of it.  I swear a door opened from the actual blimp and they jumped through a window into the building.  Leonardo recognizes the fighting style on the tape very quickly.  He knows only Splinter or Shredder could teach that.  How could he tell that?  I clearly am not well versed enough in the ways of the ninja as he is.  The “crooked ninja turtle gang” also kicks open safes!  For being humans they learned some powerful moves from Shredder.  The force you would need for that is insane.  They should be able to defeat the turtles, at least Slash since he was the one actually seen doing it.  Tiffany enters and screams while Raphael says, “It’s a sonic death ray!”  The turtles take off and Burne insists on running the tape for tonight’s news.   I wonder what Tiffany sees in Burne?  He is probably earning a high salary maybe that’s why.

Shredder asks Krang for help upon revealing his initial plan to frame the turtles it was funny as Krang refused noting nothing has been done yet.  Krang didn’t seem impressed either, he was probably laughing about it over dinner later.

Oops, wrong Napoleon
Our old buddy Baxter Stockman is in an insane asylum having a wonderful chat with some weirdo who thinks he’s Napoleon Bonaparte.  I suppose he’s there as a result of the mousers and claiming he’s seen giant humanoid turtles and rats.  Baxter explaining the turtles to crazy Napoleon is hilarious as Napoleon mentions he never had those problems in France.  That guy is a nut for sure.  Shredder enters through a window after bending the metal bars like straw.  I guess they just make it look like metal to make the inmates think there’s no escape.  Baxter says he can make the ultimate rat catching machine from a drill machine he watches out of his window every day.  He really is nuts to think that, it’s clear Baxter is a bit more looney than last season.  He captures Splinter very easily in the sewer den, where was your psychic sense for that Splinter?  I wonder if he heard that giant machine echoing in the sewers.  Let’s back up and consider how Baxter built this machine.  He had to steal it so we assume Shredder broke him out and helped.  How quickly he did it is amazing.  Where did he get all the parts?  I think it’s too much to question, ha-ha!  Sometimes you just have to let it go.

What are you waiting for Shredder?
The turtles arrive home to find Splinter gone so they follow the path of the machine.  It leads to the crooked ninja turtle gang.  They dispose of them very easily with the classic fashion they do it in.  Leonardo cuts a sofa couch cushion and provokes two goons to him as they get caught in the springs.  Raphael kicks barrels onto two more amazingly enough while Donatello whips some tires onto some more with his bo.  They force Slash to spill the beans of where Splinter is.  The dojo is where Shredder has a giant fist shaped battering ram aimed at Splinter.  How did he get that thing up there?  Even with all his goons it still seems impossible.  The turtles show up while Baxter crashes through a wall in his rat catcher machine.  The turtles dismantle the machine forcing Baxter to leap out as they pile on top of it.  Shredder cuts the rope holding the battering ram while Leonardo quickly cuts Splinter free just as Baxter’s machine gets destroyed by the ram threw the wall.  It’s a solid finish although I would like to see Shredder fight the turtles some and throw them around.  He doesn’t engage very much which is disappointing as I like to see more battling from him.  Shredder takes Baxter with him and the police show up again to force the turtles to retreat as well.  Why did the police show up?  I’m guessing it was April when she found the message of where to find Shredder on the side of a building near the caught crooked ninja turtle gang.

The conclusion has April revealing on her news report that the crooked ninja turtle gang were humans.  She also winks into the camera as the turtles argue over who it was meant for.  April obviously can hear them and states on the air it was for Splinter.  Somebody left their turtle com on, how else could she hear them?  Anyway props Splinter, you did nothing and get the wink.  The episode is pretty good and I’d rank it higher on the list of overall episodes.  It’s funny and doesn’t get too silly to where you’d rather turn it off.  Next up is “The Incredible Shrinking Turtles.”  It sounds awful already doesn’t it?  I hate shrinking in general as a plot for any show or movie, until next time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (1990)

This movie is attached to countless memories of mine.  What an incredible leap to the live action scene for the turtles!  It’s very funny and blends story with simple battle scenes that entertain quite well.  It’s loaded with turtle power too.  I was that eight year old boy that ran around pretending to be a ninja turtle.  I remember in my teenage years I grew embarrassed of that because let’s face it those years are just chaotic for everyone.  One of my personal favorite memories is getting the nunchucks Michelangelo uses stuck in trees over and over.  Why did I throw them twirling into the air towards branches?  There are still things I can’t explain even as an adult, I suppose it was just fun.  When you know a movie by heart line for line I would say you can call yourself a fan or a parent.  This is one of those movies that falls under that category for me.  When I recently watched it I still was rattling off the dialogue in excitement.  Without further ado though let’s get to the film itself to see how much you remember.

Kitchen utensil extraordinaire
New York City (where everything always happens) is being victim of an organized crime spree lead by one bad dude, the Shredder.  April O’Neil is reporting the story on TV as the mini-montage shows thugs and the foot clan stealing electronics.  It’s interesting to see Shredder using rejected from society young men to do his stealing for him.  I wonder why he came to America to train Americans in the way of the ninja to merely steal small time style.  I want to say he had something sinister and far better going for him in Japan but was forced to flee to the states.  He did murder people there so I guess it pans out.  He wouldn’t want to get his butt shredded in prison over in Japan now would he?  When I think of the evil Shredder I think of a more elaborate grand scheme that’s all.  I take it Shredder is hoarding money for a future endeavor.  Now I get it he is saving up money to purchase a technodrome.  I would really like to see that huge golf ball on crack in the live action world of cinema.

I may not act like a reporter but I swear I am one!
April gets mugged right outside her news station by some thugs and gets saved by the turtles in their first battle.  I always remember Leonardo saying, “I got her watch!”  Was he retrieving it for her in that darkened chaos?   She also sees a rat in the parking lot that will get comically referenced later.  Raphael loses his sai and April slides it into her bag without realizing he is watching her.  That crime scene evidence April, you’re tampering for shame.  Lucky for Raphael though, it would have been a souvenir at the police station for who knows how long.  He mutters, “Damn” as he lowers the sewer lid descending downward.  I love his attitude; it really throws a wrench into the brotherhood of the turtles. The turtles are excited over their first victory and an awesome intro for them comes as they head home.  Just before they walk into their lair Raphael says, “Damn” one more time as he looks at his lone sai in his hand.  He really misses his weapon, I wonder if he’ll try to get it back somehow?

Raphael you lose sai faster than I lose my hearing
Splinter is patiently awaiting their return as he sees his exuberant turtles come back home.  Leonardo is still pumped up over their battle but calmly stops himself as he briefs his master on the encounter.  It’s a great moment as Splinter is explaining the importance of what it takes to be a true ninja but Michelangelo is ordering pizza on a pay phone disturbing him.  He eventually throws a book at him to get him off the phone.  Michelangelo is insistent to not put anchovies on the pizza.  “If you put anchovies on this pizza you’re in big trouble OK?”  I lose it every time I watch that part, it’s hilarious!  Who talks like that on the phone while ordering?  Splinter ends by saying they have but one lesson still to learn.  Splinter meditates as the turtles dance.  They’re still teenagers after all.  Raphael complains he lost a sai and he can get it back.  Splinter doesn’t seem to mind that it’s gone though.  If you lost your walking stick how would you feel rat?  It’s more of a lesson to not cling to possessions if anything at all.  Raphael goes out to a movie alone to vent some steam.  He has quite a short fuse.

Long story short, I spent a lot of time in the penalty box
Raphael leaves the movie disgusted, well you were apparently watching “Critters” dude, and stops some thieves from robbing a lady, now that a good turtle!  He opens his brown trench coat to show a sai to the punks who in turn take off into the park.  It was intimidating as a kid watching that moment but as an adult it’s a bit funny, it’s not like it’s a gun Raphael.  I admit it’s a great scene.  Doesn’t everyone notice he’s not quite human?  He walks around with no shoes exposing his big turtle feet.  I suppose it would put a damper on things if everyone was shouting freak when they saw him and I’m pretty sure Raphael would slip with his sai at some point injuring somebody.  Casey Jones (Elias Koteas) makes his appearance in the park as he wants to beat the young thieves up.  Raphael puts a stop to it and battles Casey.  The dialogue isn’t up to par but it’s a decent enough scene.  Raphael gets bested and rolls over a taxi hood while pursuing Casey trying to get even with him.  He exclaims, “Damn” once more as he loses the chase.  The cab driver takes it all in stride, typical New Yorker; they’ve seen it all right?  I want to add that think Elias Koteas was a great Casey Jones, liked the performance.

Clearly not a turtle
One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Raphael returns home to Splinter.  Splinter senses from his “son” that he is troubled.  It’s viewed that Splinter is like a father to the turtles in the way he brought them up.  Raphael wants to wait until morning to discuss it but that doesn’t happen.  You better listen to your master boy!  It’s actually a touching moment as Splinter tries to channel Raphael’s anger but his student keeps it as an inner struggle.  Splinter reminds him that he and his brothers are always there for him.  He also states how he is unique among his brothers.  You can really feel the bond the two have and how much they mean to one another.  It’s very well executed.

Perfect crossover
April O’Neil interviews the chief of police, Sterns a very volatile man, the turtles are watching it on TV.  Raphael wants his sai back so he goes out to follow her to retrieve it.  Chief Sterns tries to verbally rip April in his office but she runs off.  The foot clan catches April in the subway as she feebly attempts to ward them off with a sai.  Where’s the mace April?  Spray those guys in their beady eyes.  They deck her being the noble guys they are after telling her to watch her mouth about the stories she has been reporting on them.  Shredder was very upset with her as he threw a dagger into a TV screen at his warehouse hideout.  That’s right he has a cliché warehouse as a base of operations.  Raphael comes to her rescue and makes short work of the foot clan.  He doesn’t knock them all out though or even tie them up.  Raphael I wouldn’t tell Splinter if you killed them with your sai.  You were defending April, he’ll understand or he’ll take both of your sai away.  That would really make him sad.  He is very attached to them.  Anyway he grabs April up and takes her back to the sewer den.  Little does he know that one of the foot members has followed him all the way back home.  Way to go Raphael, now they know where you live!  He had baggage though what could he do right?  The turtles need some security cameras or a crocodile guarding the sewer den.  Wouldn’t that make for a classic character in a future movie, Leatherhead.  It’s also funny to use a crocodile to guard the sewers since that’s where they get tossed once they grow too big as pets, ha-ha.

Finally fresh air, I was tired of smelling crap all the time
Donatello keeps asking Raphael why he brought her back to their home.  It’s a funny back and forth moment with them two.  Raphael lays her out on the couch and delivers this hilarious line, “a couple of throw pillows, a TV news reporter what do you think?”  She wakes up and freaks out naturally at seeing giant turtles and a big rat staring at her.  Splinter goes on to tell her the back story of them.  “He talks and he even knows my name, perfect.”  April delivers a hilarious line.  The foot clan member is spying on them all at this time.  Who is the better ninja now?  A guy who used to flip burgers at McDonald’s before Shredder persuaded him to join the foot clan or the ninja turtles?  The turtles escort April home to her apartment to make sure she’s safe and stay for frozen pizza.  It’s funny and it builds the relationship between April and the turtles.  When the turtles leave Leonardo suggest it as he knows Splinter worries about them, aww so sweet, err.  They arrive home to find their place ransacked and more importantly Splinter gone!  Raphael is extremely upset and shouts “Splinter!”  A man walking up above on the street cautiously walks around the vent from the yelling with a funny mannerism.  They decide to return to Aprils place in sorrow and sadness, the poor guys.
Cut him Shredder!

Charles Pennington is April’s boss and he visits her the next morning, great.  He wants to know if his ace reporter is alright after an alleged attack.  He brings his rotten son Danny along who spots Michelangelo hiding under the table.  Come on Mikey, can we try a bit harder?  Are you 3yrs old?  That’s a horrible hiding area!  Danny is a follower of Shredder and tattle tails on the turtles.  Danny you’re a turd you know that?  And give April her $20 back you petty thief.  Danny and his father have a tough time getting along although his dad seems like a decent guy.  They never mention the mother so if she’s gone at least dad is trying right?  Perhaps Charles murdered her and Danny knows it so he resents his father severely for it, too harsh for a turtle movie, probably.

They look like insects don't they?  The eyes..
Raphael gets ticked off that his brothers are cowering in April’s apartment.  Michelangelo is sitting extremely close to the television watching a cartoon of the tortoise and the hare.  Are you eyes that bad dude?  They will be if someone doesn’t pull your sorry shell away from the TV.  “Ninja kick the damn rabbit!  He blew right by you!”  His commentary is very funny.  Donatello and Michelangelo smell a fight coming up with Leonardo and Raphael and hid in the kitchen eating some food.  Raphael mocks Leonardo while Leonardo calls Raphael a jerk; it’s a great sibling argument leading Raphael to leave to go vent his frustration.  Casey Jones sees Raphael on the roof from across the city, since Casey is a pervert that spies around with binoculars?  I’m just saying, seriously why is he up there?  Purse snatchers don’t find many purses on rooftops you know?  April gives the other turtles a tour of her antique store downstairs.

No smiling in the foot clan!
Raphael, meanwhile, is battling against all odds on the rooftop against countless foot clan members that jumped him and he’s doing well to start.  He even asks how they think they can win against him.  Numbers prove too much for Raphael and they throw his angry shell through the rooftop window in Aprils place.  The foot crash into the place hungry for some spankings!  It’s awesome to see Michelangelo and a random nunchucking foot member have a “chuck off”.  The battle ensues with some awesome action and even some comedy.  Casey Jones arrives to help out since he so enjoys beating things up with sporting equipment, watch out for the jock strap sling shot!  Ahh herpes infection!  I love the line by Michelangelo when asked who Casey is, “Wayne Gretzy, on steroids?”  It’s not terribly funny but for some reason hits my funny bone.  The building catches fire, naturally, thanks to the foot clan and the good guys head out a secret exit.  Casey also overhears April getting fired.  They escape in a van, not the turtle van, while April watches her building burn down.  It was her father’s antique shop and you can see the sadness it causes her.  Off to the old farm where time stands still.

I can't believe we put him in the bath tub!  Classic!
Shredder has Splinter captured and questions who these turtles are.  He back hands him and everything, he’s a boss alright.  He’s also pissed at his right hand man’s, Tatsu, failure at defeating the turtles.  Tatsu makes a fool of himself by trashing his own men after Shredder gives him the silent look of death.  Why dude?  You trained them so if they suck it’s your fault, why don’t you kick your own sorry butt?  He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed anyway.  At the farm the turtles are somewhat down about losing their last battle.  Leonardo is sorrowing over Raphael who is in a bath tub!  Why there?  Are there any beds in this place?  They treat Raphael like crap, I would hate to wake up in a bath tub, but at least it’s not the toilet right?  He does wake up and Leonardo gets hysterical which is funny and silly.  Raphael tells him to get a grip, ha-ha classic.

Proof that spiritual enlightenment can go a long way
Casey and April seem to be hitting it off in an awkward way, acting wise anyway.  Casey and Donatello fix a truck to drive back to the city but not before Leonardo receive a telepathic message from Splinter.  I had no idea telepathy existed in the turtles.  It’s constricted to the father and son bond so it’s not something they do with anybody.  The turtles head out at night to meditate at a campfire.  This is possibly my favorite scene.  Donatello brings marshmallows but has to put them away.  Leonardo is dead serious, look out guys.  The turtles learn their final ninja technique of the mind, apparently to be telepathic, as Splinter shows up in the fire in spirit.  The visuals are still fantastic to me.  He encourages and says to them his final words in life that he loves them.  It’s touching actually, let yourself feel it, the concept of the turtles and a rat seems ridiculous but it’s an emotional display correctly executed.  Leonardo confirms it time to go back, in which it’s been a few days since they were gone I think.

I'm too old for this sh!t
“Now I know how it feels to travel without a green card” says Raphael exiting the back of the truck in the pouring rain.  I didn’t know what that meant at all as a kid but it’s rather funny now.  It’s a bit racist in referring to people smuggling in a pickup truck through whatever weather necessary to reach America.  Danny Pennington is hiding in the turtle’s home then being the confused teenager he is leaves in the dark of night to go back to the foot clan’s warehouse.  You better not rat the turtles out again Danny, sorry Splinter for that pun.  Casey Jones follows him as he was sleeping in the truck.  Why is he in the truck and not the comfortable hygienic confines of the sewer?  I’ll explain.  Donatello notices Casey to be claustrophobic and points it out.  Casey replies, “Hey, I never looked at another guy.”  He thought he was claiming he was a homosexual but when he learns what it really means he has a Raphael like moment and goes topside.  Danny, back at the warehouse, has a rap session with Splinter and gets turned into a good guy realizing how evil Shredder really is.  About time dude, he wears sharp metal all over his body; he’s up to something man.  Shredder catches Danny and discovers the turtles are back, he decides he will kill them since Tatsu can’t handle it.  He orders Tatsu instead to kill Splinter, he can handle that right?

Sam Rockwell says cigarettes are cool
Casey now catches Danny and they set off to rescue Splinter from certain death.  Casey tangles with Tatsu and wins with a driver to the head of Tatsu.  You have to love his taste in weaponry, I know I do.  Luckily for Tatsu it wasn’t a gun or butcher knife, ouch.  Sam Rockwell, I mean “Head Thug” makes an awesome appearance. I had no idea he was in it until this very recent time I watched it.  You should have seen me staring closer and closer at the TV trying to figure out who he was.  It’s as if by getting closer I could be revealed as to who this mystery actor is.  I’m a fan of Rockwell so it was worth it for me and now I have one more reason to love this movie.  The foot clan invades the turtle’s home, big mistake; on their home turf they don’t stand a chance.  You might be better at spying on people foot clan but not actually ninja fighting it out!  It’s a fantastic battle sequence that any turtle lover will enjoy, even casual fans or non fans would get a kick out of it.  The shell smash by Donatello and Michelangelo is great as they mention the classic, shell-shock after it.  The two as they often do in the movie go back and forth on what a good catch line for the shell smash should be.  They settle on, “It was a shell of a good hit.”  They dispatch the ninja’s easily and come face to face with Shredder.

Cowabunga always says it all, there is no substitute
They attempt to fight him but are no match in the one on one arena with Shredder.  He is far beyond their skill which is actually neat, a story where the heroes have limits.  Shredder finally gets Leonardo at the point of his weapon forcing the other turtles to throw their weapons off a rooftop in which they now fight upon.  Except that the nunchucks have caught around the fire escape ladder!  I love Shredder’s line, “The three of you might have over powered me with the loss of but one.”  But Splinter shows up and Shredder loses it, he charges, gets out maneuvered and left dangling over the edge.  Shredder tries to throw a dagger at Splinter but he catches it, wow.  He freefalls into the back of a garbage truck and Casey says, “Oops” While turning it on, crushing the Shredder to death if he wasn’t already from the fall that is.  I love that line by Casey; it’s hilarious to see it at just the right time.  You don’t expect a good guy to do something like that!

Henson isn't gone he just lives with the turtles now
A hardy cowabunga is chanted by the turtles as the movie comes to a close.  Danny and his father reunite and make amends, which is rather heartwarming.  Casey and April get it on, and then we get an amazing song.  Before we get to that though let's remember Jim Henson's work on creating the costumes.  I'm a big Henson fan myself and only thought it proper.  I may make fun of or joke about certain aspects of this movie but that doesn’t stop me from really enjoying it after all these years.  It has much to offer in the way of humor and it’s a pre-CGI era film I’ll always appreciate.

Shredder & Splintered

Episode 5
We finish up the pilot set with much satisfaction to be had.  The turtles and even Splinter are on a quest to put an end to the Shredder.  Who wouldn’t though, he is constantly trying to destroy them.  Meanwhile April desperately wants her story she’s been unable to get on the turtles.  This episode will bring season one to an end and we won’t quite see anything like these episodes in the future.

The turtles are motivated by the news reports depicting them as a menace.  But come on their mutant anomalies what could be so surprising that the general public hates them?  People don’t like different even in a cartoon!  The turtles get a direct broadcast from Shredder on their television set as he shows off his retro-mutagen ray generator.  I love well thought out technical gadget device names.  I also love how he could directly transmit to their television or did everyone in New York City get that message too?  I can imagine some New Yorker watching his TV thinking it’s some sort of advertisement for pest control.  Splinter is enticed to get it to return to his human form which you can see he wants to be in truth.  Who would really want to be a rat man?  He’s also afraid Shredder will obviously try to use it on the turtles.

Like this will make a difference.
They set out on the vehicle the neutrinos left for them, how cool of them you know to leave it behind for the turtles.  It runs out of fuel immediately, ha-ha the neutrinos do have a sense of humor!  Donatello gets an idea of a new replacement vehicle he could build at Baxter’s work shop, they are really whoring out Baxter and his inventions all they can.  Down in the technodrome Shredder finally has constructed Krang’s new body.  Krang hands him a molecular amplification device he insists on installing inside his body.  Shredder does so, I wonder what that does?  It’s funny to see Shredder put on gloves to lift Krang into the android robot.  Hey he doesn’t want to get slime all over his shiny blades you know?  I wonder if Krang has some strange horrible smell too, it seems like he would.  He cackles the machine on while letting loose, “It’s alive!  It’s alive!”  A classic well performed line I must say!

Our buddies Bebop and Rocksteady are sent to slow the turtles down.  They do manage to sneak up behind them and strangle their necks.  I like to see the tough character from those two brutes and the obvious strength they display by slamming the turtles into the wall.  Rocksteady goes crazy blasting his rifle at them while asking if he hurt them and shooting is the supposed medicine.  Raphael comments, “The boy loves his work” a very fitting line for the situation, ha-ha.  Bebop throws a car at them while Leonardo says, “I think they’re beginning to tire.”  Raphael zings back, “Yeah in a few hours they’ll barely be able to throw a car at us.”  They dump garbage and wet cement on them holding them in place in classic fashion.

They continue on down to the technodrome with Splinter to get the gun when foot soldiers come out to engage them.  Splinter heads inside to face Shredder while the turtles dispatch of the robots.  Raphael’s brilliant idea to destroy a raw sewage pipe displays nice recklessness in defeating the foot soldiers.  I’m sure some crewman will be happy to clean that up one day.

Looks like Splinter missed the block.
April goes bananas when her boss Burne Thompson fires her!  She threatens him with a turtle communicator Donatello gave to her earlier.  It looks like a make-up compact; Donatello is there something you’d like to share with us?  The threat works as she gets her crew for a story but awkwardly done I might say.  Splinter finds the ray gun but it’s a hologram, curse these old rat eyes!  Shredder appears and we get a classic battle between the leaders.  Shredder does hologram himself while Splinter has trouble figuring out which one is which; these old rat eyes trick me twice!  The fight is great as character development sneaks into the battle subtly.

Not so fast, well they are rocks..
The turtles see Krang in his body while Michelangelo points onto the screen and says, “Who’s the weirdo?”  You have to love the silly dialogue.  General Traag is set to comeback at Krang’s command but the turtles intervene and trick Krang away from the trans-dimensional portal.  Krang was swayed to beat the turtles, but now he simply chases them from the technodrome as he grows too big for his britches, ha-ha!  He knocks a hole above in his giant size and proceeds upwards.  Did you forget you wanted to destroy the turtles?  You nearly had them under foot down below; did the molecular amplification device cause short term memory loss or brain damage?  Luckily the turtles avoid that one.

Leo can I give it a shot?  I got it Don!!!
Donatello arrives in the famous turtle blimp.  How he built it so fast is so impressive and he even had time to paint it in turtle fashion!  Did Baxter paint it?  Perhaps Baxter all along was planning to join and help the turtles in their quest to defeat Shredder?  I doubt he’ll have that same compassion anymore as they have strip mined his workshop.  Get revenge on them Baxter I implore you!  Props Donatello, you know how to work with stolen goods!  April pursues them while filming her story.  Donatello figures out Krang must have some sort of device enlarging him so he goes inside Krang’s body with Leonardo.  They find the device and Leonardo isn’t able to hack it out, although he previously sliced through a streetlight pole and a raw sewage pipe, I guess it must be dull by now.  Donatello steps in and pokes through it with his staff.  Leonardo is thinking; show me up again Donnie, I dare you.  I’m the leader!  They escape the shrinking Krang and proceed to battle him 4 on 1.  Krang cries to Shredder for help on a communicator.  Krang can make his arms and hands change into different things, so why not that ray gun or a rocket launcher?  I guess he panicked under pressure!

Shredder imprisons Splinter in an electric cage to make his escape.  Splinter cleverly uses his long rat nails to unscrew a bolt in the floor and bull’s-eye the device imprisoning him.  Watch out at the carnivals for him, he’ll clean you out!  Shredder arrives and aims the gun at the turtles delivering the line, “Tonight I dine on turtle soup.”  Wickedness man, one of the best lines!  Splinter throws his trusty walking stick to break the gun though.  He had to save his boys at his own cost of becoming human again, noble Splinter.  I do commend Shredder for actually trying to shoot he just was a bit too slow with Splinter’s deadly throwing accuracy.  Shredder and Krang retreat to the technodrome to release the rock soldiers from dimension X.  The turtles stop them as Donatello reverses the flow of the portal while we get a couple glimpses of Raphael engaging Shredder one on one.  I’d like to see that fight.

The technodrome gets sucked into itself somehow but who cares its neat.  Now were Rocksteady and Bebop in the technodrome or are they still garbage statues back in New York City?  I love to see Krang and Shredder still vying for the upper hand in dimension x.  “The Shredder takes orders from no one!”  With Krang adding we will see, ha-ha.

Hot Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X

Episode 4
The turtles meet the neutrinos, youths from a war torn world, and join forces to repel Shredder’s attempt to destroy them.  Rock soldiers under Krang’s command aid Shredder in his quest as well.  Meanwhile a weather making device threatens the entire city!

We start as the turtles get the brilliant idea of pushing their stolen van up the stairs to Baxter Stockman’s work area.  The display of mutant strength is in exhibition here.  I love how they all get a good laugh of Baxter being in jail for the mouser destruction when they’re technically thieves themselves!  But nobody really cares about Baxter’s belongings so it’s no big deal.  Donatello within hours does the impossible by revamping the van into a new high tech computer on wheels.  I’m truly impressed by the brain in that turtle.  Leonardo did prefer the roof three feet higher to practice his katana techniques but was refused.

Shredder is obsessed at destroying the turtles while dismissing his failed mutant experiments Bebop and Rocksteady.  They plead for another shot but don’t get it.  It’s great to see their tough attitude and fierce some personalities still intact at this point.  Krang warns Shredder of using Dimension X to gain more power.  Shredder promptly ignores him of course and releases the Neutrinos and General Traag and his rock soldier to earth.  They flee topside, the neutrinos, while you get a neat short scene of Bebop and Rocksteady battling the rock soldiers.  Shredder puts an end to it and gives the rock soldiers the best ground vehicle in the house for the destruction of the neutrinos, what about the turtles Shredder?

Neutrinos from the 80's dimension?
The turtles pursue the neutrinos from the subway entrance as Raphael says, “Is it just me or did we just get buzzed by a couple of rocket powered low riders?”  Hilarious delivery by my favorite turtle, the jokes delivered in this episode for sure.  It was Leonardo who managed to track the hectic flying patterns of the neutrinos to head them off.  The attitude of Leonardo is very fitting of a leader in many aspects.  The turtles eventually bring down the hot rods and come to terms they are on the same side.

General Traag action figure
General Traag interrupts the play date the turtles are having at the arcade by firing a couple eyeball missiles into the joint.  It’s classic to see the turtles hanging out in public without a disguise while the employees of the arcade attribute it to the craziness of the city.  The theme music triggers as the turtle van goes up against the tank like vehicle of Traag.  Raphael exits the side of the van on a seated gun while firing yelling, “Eat hot lead turkeys!”  Turkeys?  That’s always been a favorite insult of mine.  I like the blaster use from the turtle’s side of the battle though.  Leonardo exits the other side and slices up the tires as Michelangelo yells, “Rip it up Leonardo!”  I enjoyed the lines very much this episode.  The police arrive and the turtles split the scene.  Traag then deploys his weather maker.

Back to the Future? Nah..
The turtle’s return to consult with Master Splinter, which displays their student side of their lives in gaining knowledge for a final decision, it’s very fitting.  They decide to go to the technodrome to stop Shredder from releasing armies of rock soldiers.  April has to stay with the turtle van like a baby sitter while the rest of them fly inside the technodrome.  Donatello and Leonardo head to the portal room to get the dimensional gateway working to send back the rock soldiers.  No password or security on your equipment Shredder, too bad for you dude.  Bebop and Rocksteady enter with foot soldiers as the theme music triggers again, yes a double dose of it this episode!  Leonardo protects Donatello while saying, “There are only eight of them” in response to Donatello asking if he can handle it.  Of course Leonardo can handle it, he’s the main turtle.  Although Rocksteady does grab him by the throat and fling him aside as Donatello presses a button to drop the goons into an black empty hole.

Rock solid characters
Michelangelo and Raphael attempt to get Krang but fail as a force field is protecting them all (Shredder and the rock soldiers).  They retreat back to the others to finish off the rock soldiers.  Michelangelo breaks his weapons on the rock torso of the soldier and gets hit back nearly into dimension X!  The soldiers get pushed into the portal thanks to some nearby oil lying around.  The neutrinos follow suddenly interested in waging war back against the army of Krang in Dimension X.

Rocking the four story bunk!
The conclusion finds Shredder finally deciding to ask Krang to defeat the turtles for him by completing his body.  Krang get supreme satisfaction in that notion.  April reads the tortoise and the hare to the turtles about five times before bed, in their awesome four high bunks.  Leonardo walks in all serious cleaning his katana like one bad turtle stating “Tomorrow we will finish the Shredder.”  Cold and deadly says the leader.  The fourth of five pilot set gets back on track with one more to come.
