Citizen Ghost

Episode 11 – Season 1

J. Michael Straczynski strikes again in another well written episode.  The origin of Slimer joining the Ghostbusters is answered as well as how he got his name.  I would say this episode has got to be a fan favorite due to the inclusion of how the story continues following the events with Gozer from the movie.  The firehouse gets rebuilt along with a bigger containment unit and a new ghostly foe emerges to pose a challenge the guys didn’t even see coming!

Spare me the crap and let's do this interview!
It all starts when Cynthia Crawford, making her second and sadly final appearance in the series, comes to the firehouse to interview Peter about the history of the Ghostbusters.  She meets Janine first and says, “You must be Janine Melnitz.”  “Well if I must I must though all things considered I’d rather be Meryl Streep.”  Janine answers back.  It’s not the funniest thing in the world but shortly later it amplifies enough to be more worth the initial dialogue.  Cynthia makes her way upstairs into Egon’s workspace where all the guys are.  She again starts off her conversation with, “You must be Dr. Peter Venkman.”  Naturally he replies with, “If I must I must but I’d much rather be..” when Cynthia cuts him off before he can finish!  She says, “If you don’t mind I’ve driven off that bridge already.”  That’s a cold statement to make upon meeting someone wouldn’t you agree?  It’s funny though and still gets better. The two of them head downstairs to Peter’s office area to begin the interview.

Cynthia gets a bit startled when she meets the slimeball himself, Slimer.  She, for a third time, says, “You must be Slimer.”  Slimer starts the same reply as Janine and Peter but gets cut off by Peter this time!  She then points out that it’s a bit strange to have a ghost roaming free in the firehouse with them.  Peter gives one of his best lines in the series in reply, “Strange, weird, eccentric, sick that about covers it.”  It’s so funny how he doesn’t even defend it but that’s what makes his character better.  That leads straight to the back story this episode is all about when Peter explains among other things why Slimer is with them.

FLASHBACK

Some slight structural damages
After defeating Gozer the Ghostbusters return to the firehouse which is now in shambles.  Egon mentions how he will build a bigger containment unit this time and how important it is to destroy their current movie-esque jumpsuits since they absorbed a lot of psychokinetic energy.  I love it when they talk that lingo it makes it seem more true to the nature of the Ghostbusters.  Janine surprises them with their new duds afterwards which are now the different colored ones we’re all accustomed to.  It’s really cool to see the pieces of marshmallow still sticking to the guys too!

Stay Puft droppings remain..
Later Peter and Egon are going over the checklist of the containment unit to make sure everything is in order.  Of course Peter isn’t taking it seriously and gets caught not paying attention.  “Transwarp drive” Egon asks.  Peter confirms it while Egon says he’s not going to speak to him for awhile and that it’s bad for his health!  It’s a classic scene in the series.  As Egon leaves he reminds Peter to burn the old uniforms which Peter didn’t.  He promptly kicks the box right into a corner next to the containment unit of all places.  Way to go Peter, do you realize what you’ve done?!  It’s that lazy aspect of Peter that I like though and without this action it wouldn’t be an episode.  One last tiny crack remained in the containment unit and slowly seeped out ectoplasmic energy that went straight into the old uniforms.  I hope nothing supernatural happens because of that!

Food doesn't go through walls!
Weeks later I would assume as the guys fixed up the firehouse they had their first dinner back at the newly restored building.  Egon picks up a reading on his PKE meter which he even brings to the dinner table.  The man never stops working not even while he eats!  Slimer makes his presence visible when he floats in and snags their thanksgiving type dinner from the table.  Peter recognizes him immediately and the chase begins with the theme music kicking in!  Slimer goes through the front door thinking the food will come with him but gets surprised when he loses it.  He does manage to get away without the food as Egon wonders why he stuck around the firehouse when all the other ghosts didn’t after the containment unit exploded.  Janine claims it’s because he was lonely and the Ghostbusters were the only ones who paid attention to him.  She could be onto something.  Peter insists Slimer merely wants another shot at him.  They might both be right!

Creep-tastic!
As time passed Slimer had brief run-ins with the Ghostbusters and nothing of concern happened.  The funny scene was when Ray decided to name him Slimer to annoy Peter.  It’s a very creative way to pull that off and it works well.  Next Peter’s negligence shows its familiar face in the form of ghost specters.  They look and talk like the Ghostbusters and come complete with ectoplasmic proton packs!  The problem is that they want to bust the guys.  During the scuffle I like how Janine comes strolling in through the front door clearly after hours with a bag of groceries.  What is she up to?  Go home or are you hoping Egon will come downstairs for a midnight snack?  She does show interest in him as he saves her unaware behind from the specter Egon.  They get away and Ray says, “What we’re dealing with is us, those things look just like us.”  “Speak for yourself Ray I couldn’t look that bad on a bet.”  Peter replies.  Then Egon figures it out but in Peter’s version of the story nobody is to blame.

One of the best explanations for a ghost is then unveiled by Egon as they examine the now empty box.  He says ectoplasm is like putty and the more you add the bigger it gets.  He goes on to say they look like them due to the mental imprint left on things you touched.  It’s neat and justifies the specters soundly.

Ambushed!
As more time passes the Ghostbusters almost forget about their counterparts until they show up on one of their calls, nice awareness guys.  Peter nearly gets hit by his specter self as the two argue which one of them must be destroyed.  It’s a great scene to watch as the specters are trying to get rid of the Ghostbusters.  The others encounter the rest of them as they narrowly escape the ambush set up by the specters.  I like to think of it in that way.  How else could they attack the Ghostbusters while standing a chance?  They wait long enough in hiding, round up some minor ghosts to lure the Ghostbusters out into the open and then try to get them.  Later on the Ghostbusters discuss how evenly matched they are with the specters and figure out they need to find a way to drain their ectoplasmic forms.

There's not enough room in this town..
They soon get their wish as the specters sneak into the firehouse and steal ecto-1.  The proton packs were inside so that leaves them defenseless as the specters move in for the kill.  I always enjoy the episodes where the Ghostbusters are on the brink but manage to avoid the grim reapers grasp.  Egon figures out that every time the specters shoot their weapons it actually drains their ectoplasm so Slimer goes in place of Ray to try to get them to use as much as they can.  Of course Peter jokes that Janine should go and she attempts to throw a desk lamp at him!  It’s a nice little moment when Slimer comes to the aid of the guys to protect them.  My question is how would ectoplasm beams hurt Slimer?  Wouldn’t it make him bigger instead?  Let’s try to ignore that and appreciate the finale!  The ploy works and the Ghostbusters race out to get their packs from ecto-1.  Ray shouts, “Say goodnight fellas because the real Ghostbusters are here to stay!”  The capture sequence is fantastic and an excitement rushes through you as they trap the ghosts.

Slimer gets to stay for his role in stopping the specters although Peter would rather not want anyone to know he did OK it.  The flashback ends and as Cynthia Crawford leaves Peter thinks she is crazy about him.  She gives her report on television revealing that Slimer is the true unsung hero of the Ghostbusters while Peter shrugs it off as a ‘win some lose some’ philosophy.

Thus concludes one of the best through these first eleven episodes at the very least but I think I may keep the episode featuring the Sandman as my personal favorite at least for now.  This one is a close second so that warrants much praise nonetheless.  If you don’t watch many of these I’d highly recommend that you turn this one, it might make you think twice about putting your laundry off for another day at any rate!

Take Two

Episode 10 – Season 1

I watched the visual commentary on the DVD for this one.  Joe Straczynski, Joe Medjuck and Michael Gross were the guys talking about what made this episode unique in the series with the connections to the movie.  I’m a fan of Joe Straczynski’s writing on the show overall and it was very interesting to learn that he was NOT a fan of making Slimer a centerpiece of the show.  In fact he opted to not give him dialogue but rather just random words from time to time.  Upon learning this I became more of a fan of his as I hated watching this show go down the toilet without a plunger when Slimer took over later in the show.  I recommend watching these commentaries on the DVD’s if you really enjoy the Real Ghostbusters series.  They also mentioned how the voice actors would have so much fun with their roles and that makes me appreciate this show more.

This episode takes the aim that the cartoon series came first and a movie eventually spawned from it which is a neat concept.  The Ghostbusters head to Hollywood to oversee the shooting of the movie with a ton of cliché’s thrown in for good measure.  They come across a ghost haunting the set and that forces the guys to take action.  It’s a decent episode but the use of Slimer is completely unnecessary for the most part and that’s never good.  Let’s get to the nitty-gritty now.

One of the better shots in the series.
The Ghostbusters are chasing a small insignificant blue ghost to begin the episode when they are supposed to be heading for their charter plane to Hollywood.  Winston blasts the ghost but it doesn’t seem to hit its mark yet it’s assumed they captured it, oh well.  The introduction isn’t much as the guys eventually show up to get onto the plane.  An annoying reporter whines and complains about them which is sort of lame.  Janine gets a second straight cameo only appearance which stinks as her character is usually great.  She sees the green goober follow Ecto-1 but decides to not tell the Ghostbusters about him since they leave her in New York City.  The slow witted man sitting outside the airport gate making one worded comments was pretty funny as the guys fly away.  The theme song was already playing in the background and that’s all you get of it for this one, bummer.

I wonder who got it worse?
They arrive safely and get to the set to find out who will be playing them.  Peter hopes that Robert Redford would be playing him but they find out its Murray, Aykroyd and Ramis instead.  They appear less than impressed with that cast, ha-ha!  As they head off to tour the rest of the set a trap door containing a ghost is opened and the sense of a leisurely trip is fading.  The guys are led onto a set that is shooting a scene but you don’t know until they blast a giant robot called ‘Megazoid’, it’s worth two million dollars.  They thought it’s a ghost somehow but chose not to consult with a PKE meter, come on guys!  You can’t just blast everything!  The director of the movie gets pissed off big time and gets into it with Peter.  The actual ghost of the episode possesses the ‘Megazoid’ in the meantime, now we’re getting somewhere.  Its apparent Peter fought with the director and the guys are forced to remove their proton packs for the time being.  I wonder why they wore them in the first place, those things are heavy right?  They keep them in a prop room but Egon keeps his PKE meter, it’s like his first born son after all.

It would love the library.
A couple of workers brings in four prop proton packs and takes the real packs back into storage only a second after the Ghostbusters head out a different doorway.  Was this cleverly planned or mere coincidence?  The possessed ‘Megazoid’ finds the Ghostbusters and I’ll say the demented look on its face is great.  Egon uses his PKE meter to confirm there is a ghost inside it so they run to get their packs.  They don’t seem to notice how light the packs are now and go to face the ‘Megazoid’.  Standing in shock the screen cuts and they must manage to escape because in the next scene they’re in a completely new location.  Egon rigs up two PKE meters to detect the particle throwers how ingenious.  Winston says, “So if we split up into two teams we increase the odds of finding them faster!”  Egon replies, “Exactly, it will give the survivors a much better chance.”  That’s a nice thing to say Egon.  They go off to look for the packs while the ‘Megazoid’ roams freely around demanding ‘QUIET’!

All for one and one for... never-mind.
Ray and Winston wander around various sets while avoiding the ‘Megazoid’ at close range often.  Egon and Peter discover that the ghost is a sleepy type of spirit so they need to keep quiet so as to not make the ghost more aggressive.  They find the packs and Peter says, “If you could do that with lost keys we’d make a fortune.”  One of the better jokes in the episode and I’d have to say this one didn’t have too many good ones.  The loud mouth director decides to go back to the set to keep the Ghostbusters from damaging his precious two million dollar baby.  Just what we need, noise!  The Ghostbusters gather together at last with their proton packs and fire on the ‘Megazoid’, but do no damage to it.  I wonder why it didn’t blow to bits.  They need to force the ghost to come out.  Egon decides to use sign language to communicate with the ghost to come out of the machine.  He wants to convince it that the containment unit is a quiet resting place for it.  What a dastardly thing to do to a poor old spirit, we all know the containment unit is a ghastly madhouse!

The director arrives in untimely fashion and the ghost is about to re-enter the machine when the Ghostbusters trap it. In the end the machine crumbles to the floor in pieces and the guys go watch the premier of their movie with actual footage of the real movie, very cool! Janine wasn’t present. I wonder if she was ticked off at being left out of so much involving the movie, since they put her in it after all. “You know he doesn’t look a thing like me.” Peter says after seeing who plays him in the movie.

It’s a fairly decent episode and the saving grace for it is the tie in with the movie. The weak sleeping ghost story is overshadowed enough by it but as you know I love origin so I could see how typical viewers would like this more. I’ll admit it’s still one of the better episodes and watching it again wouldn’t be much of a strain.

Look Homeward, Ray

Episode 9 – Season 1

The first episode featuring a specific Ghostbuster has arrived and it’s Ray Stantz.  It’s about how Ray used to be from a small town but made it big as a Ghostbuster in New York.  He returns home to be head of a parade that celebrates a giant puma not being around.  Things naturally go wrong for him and it’s up to all of the Ghostbusters to set things right.

Elaine - Ray's long ago crush!
As it begins all of the guys except Ray are racing somewhere which ends up being the train station Ray is departing at.  Slimer tries to see him off but Peter tells him to back off, “Stay!  This is people stuff.”  I always enjoy the rotten treatment Slimer is subjected to from Peter, delightful humor!  The train is about to take off when Peter yells, “Hold the train, there’s a lobster on the track!”  I don’t get it but perhaps there is some joke about trains and lobsters I’m unaware of?  If not it’s a stupid line.  The guys toss a bunch a crap into Ray’s arms that he obviously didn’t want to take with him and tried to sneak out of the firehouse before they saw him.  They mention a mysterious puma legend which is probably a bunch of nonsense but let’s note it.  Slimer comes to say goodbye anyway which is unnecessary but shows his love for Ray I suppose.  Ray mentions his hometown is a mere thirty miles away so why don’t the guys drive him there?  They’re jerks and want to make him pay for a train ticket?  It’s really not that far but oh well no big deal.

Favish up to some dangerous trickery.
Roy Stantz is introduced at the big opening ceremony or whatever it is by the half witted mayor of this small town.  I did say Roy I know; they don’t even remember his name!  Ray meets his old crush Elaine who is quite the looker, ‘Go get her Ray’ right?  He also meets the local town turd Alan Favish, his old nemesis it seems.  Elaine has an old mansion is her possession now but it’s haunted!  Go figure so Ray decides to impress her and go busts the ghosts.  Hey who wouldn’t for her, it can be an engagement present Ray think about it!  Now this is when things get a bit shaky for me.  As Ray is marching to the mansion Alan is hustling to his shoe store apparently to cast a spell of ‘negative energy’ which will empower the ghosts haunting the mansion.  It happens incredibly fast as Ray gets a reading on his PKE meter that the ghosts are weak then the next moment they trash him and make him look like a fool.  The town turns on him instantly and Alan, of course, is the new hero!  I’m so happy now!

Ray returns to the firehouse in depression mode.  Winston mentions Ray has problems and goes to see what’s going on.  Peter states referring to what Winston said, “We knew that back in college.”  Ray tests the equipment to be sure nothing is wrong with it and there isn’t.  Winston and Peter have a small wager that Ray will attempt to go rectify his previous embarrassment back at his hometown.  Ray promptly does and is joined by Elaine who must like to wander around in the dark woods as much as him.  They team up to take a second crack at the two ghosts who bested him earlier.  Meanwhile Egon barges into the sleeping quarters, “I think we have a problem.”  Peter refusing to wake up, “Well wake me when you’re sure.”  They decide to go help Ray out.

Two in the box ready to go!
Creepy man Alan is also stalking around in the dark woods near the mansion to spy on Ray.  How did he know he was back?  It’s a small town I guess he has nothing better to do.  Ray gets defeated again by the two ghosts who, luckily for him, think it’s just funny to toss him around a bit.  His buddies show up to help when Alan chants his spell returning the ‘negative energy’ to the earth just at the most opportune moment.  Did he plan all this or is some of it just pure luck or amazing timing?  The Ghostbusters easily trap the two weenie ghosts and we get the theme music improving the scene overall.  Ray throws a fit and decides to quit being a Ghostbuster while running away.  Ray we all have bad days you just have to get through it.  The guys try to snap him out of it with some uneasy dialogue including, “Ray you’ll lose your pension benefits.”  Its daylight now as well which is a bit odd considering how quickly it came in so short a time.  Alan is also out jogging and offers Ray a new job.

Ray's new fashion!
Ray continues his downward spiral of self pity by wearing a full body pink bunny outfit and selling shoes for Alan at his store.  The guys leave as Ray just won’t come to terms with anything reasonable.  Let him wear his bunny suit in peace!  He can cuddle himself to sleep now, sorry Elaine.  The guys try to coax Ray into saving them with a set up ghost capture that Slimer ruins but I’m not surprised at all Slimer did.  It’s a neat scene and Winston helps, “Yo, its ghost bunny to the rescue!”  It’s a bit cheesy but it’s funny to see Ray with a proton pack and giant pink bunny ears.

Later Ray and Elaine find Alan’s secret spell book and more specifically the chapter about ‘negative energy’.  “To make shoes?”  I love Elaine’s comment on why Alan has such a book!  Is she that clueless?  Anyway Ray figures it all out now and rushes to warn the others at the parade he is no longer a part of.  The rest of the Ghostbusters are watching the floats go by and Egon states, “This is very bad.”  Peter adds, “Hey give him a break he can’t help how he looks.”  Peter is referring to Alan Favish going by on his shoe float but Egon has the PKE meter out getting strong readings from below the ground.  The ‘negative energy’ animation looks slick for this show as the winged puma finally makes its appearance.  I suppose that banter from earlier is true and dumb dumb Alan caused the legend to come to life.  The puma goes berserk and destroys poor Alan’s shoe store as Peter says, “Oh cute it followed him home.”  I tell you sometimes the jokes keep coming and really make the show worth watching.

The throwers have no effect since their positive energy so I guess you need the same energy to affect a ghost.  Ray saves his buddies by luring the puma away and reversing the polarity on his thrower to frighten the gigantic puma ghost off for the moment.  Winston says, “You’re worth your weight in pizza homeboy!”  Great lines!  As they give chase to the puma they construct a funky air float comprised of the shoe and Ray Stantz in float form.  It’s a somewhat anti-climatic capture scene but it wraps up the episode well enough.  Ray gets to be the grand marshal of the parade once again, Alan Favish is stuck rebuilding his crappy shoe store and a float resembling the puma gets blasted by Ray!  How they constructed that float so fast transcends me but that’s how this show goes at times.

The puma is a decent ghost in this series and really helped this episode out in my opinion.  The origin was shallow but it was more about Ray which is also a good thing.  It was cheesy at times and the timeline of events staggered a bit but I’d say it’s a pretty good episode in the end.

Irresistible (2006)

A twisting type of movie that doesn't break new territory but I liked it.  It stars Susan Sarandon, Sam Neill and Emily Blunt.  I was a bit surprised to see Sarandon still had some acting left in her but she did well as a seemingly insomniac crazy woman.  Sam Neill played her husband who was caught in the middle of her troubling times and the mysterious Emily Blunt.  It's an Australian film so when I saw it on Netflix I knew it probably didn't originally make it to the states.  It's usually always good to watch Sam Neill and it's worth a watch if you're into mystery type of thrillers.

Sarandon is a wreck but that's good for her character.  She plays an exhausted artist who has overworked herself to the point of paranoia.  Emily Blunt is a character who newly works with Sam Neill, Sarandon's husband, and has some issues of her own.  I won't go too far into her part because it's a neat character that makes the movie worth the watch.  Neill and Blunt spend time together while getting seen or caught by Sarandon at the most inopportune times.  The question that remains throughout is what is really go on here?

I'd say anybody with a half a brain could probably deduce where the movie is going but it doesn't make it so clear until the climatic ending.  Watching Sarandon stalk people around and pry into houses or hid in bushes doesn't seem like it would be interesting but I believe it comes off as barely making the cut.  I also loved the scene where Neill let's lose and throws his wife around!  Does that mean he's the bad guy?  Well do you think I'd give away pertinent information like that?  It's not a lifetime movie so you'll have to come to your own conclusion.

To wrap it up in short here, as I'd hate to give away the movie much more, it's worth one view in your lifetime if you enjoy any of these actresses/actor.  The psychology of the movie is gripping enough to let you hold on for what happens at the end.  For me it was splendid to see Sam Neill still trucking along here, let's only hope he can have at least one more encounter with some raptors in the future!

Accident (2009)

For my Hong Kong fans out there I’m sorry to have left out your movies.  Let’s break that trend and see why this movie is worth a watch whether you plan on it or not.  If you’re an American who doesn’t venture outside their own country to check out foreign films you’d be best to know that we don’t make all the ‘best’ movies, that’s Hollywood hogwash!  The internet connects and binds us so why shouldn’t our movies as well.  Enough introduction filler, let’s get to the movie.

The movie takes place in Hong Kong with a four person team that works together to kill people by making the deaths look like accidents.  The deaths they conjure up are quite interesting and you discover early on that they are a freelance type of death service.  The main guy in charge is a perfectionist and also the brains of the outfit.  A fat guy collects payment and does some of the running around for them.  The old guy causes some sort of non obvious distraction and a woman rounds out the team, I forget what she does.  There you have it, the death team.

You get to see the team set up an elaborate accident and kill a mob boss of some kind as the movie begins.  It’s a quiet movie meaning there isn’t much dialogue so that helps having to read a bunch of subtitles which I’m not a huge fan of.  The lead guy of the team comes across as being a bit paranoid as he takes this way and that just to get home where he has a stockpile of cash in a safe.  All is well for everyone until the next job.

During the second accident the team wishes to set up the wheels fall off and the fatty gets hit by a bus.  The lead man thinks someone is after him or his team and trying to dispose of them by means of an accident!  At this point I really fell into the movie and believed it to be true because why wouldn’t there be others like them out there doing the same thing.  They’re so discreet and private if there was another team out there you wouldn’t know it if they also knew what they were doing.  It’s around this time as well that the old man on the team begins to suffer from memory loss.  The lead man returns home to find his apartment broken into with his money all stolen.  The police inform him that many apartments in the building were also robbed.  He believes more firmly now that someone is indeed after him and he becomes even more paranoid.

He finds a new place to live and begins following around some people and even his team member woman in hopes of discovering the truth.  He has a run in with her at a pick up spot for new accident assignments and ends up doing something rash.  What was it?  Well you should probably watch to find out because I’d rather not spoil it if I already haven’t.  He tails a man he believes is behind the death of the fatty on his team and ultimately is responsible for killing his wife or girlfriend.  It’s a real thinker as you try to unravel what exactly is happening to this man and whether or not an accident is being targeted for him.

The ending is well done and I’d hate to spoil it so take my word on it that’s its worth the watch.  I saw this on Netflix so search for it if you get the time for it won’t waste your time if you like a well put together movie.  It might make you think twice when you hear the term freak accident!

The Dark Knight (2008)

I’d like to come out of the gates by admitting I’m not much of a Batman fan.  However I do fancy many of the foes that he squares off against and the Joker is an interesting character to say the least.  In this case nothing is known of the Joker including where he comes from, what he’s done previously in his life or why he really got those scars.  I opened my eyes wide during the brief story Alfred shared in the movie about a man he met earlier in his life that was similar to the Joker.  I’ll get to that excerpt later though as I would like to now state that I believe this movie was too elaborate for its own good.  Now it will take me time to explain why I think it was but I trust you’ll understand what I’m talking about throughout the review.

The opening scene is a common bank heist but it’s done cleverly enough to avoid complications.  I like the clown masks they wear to add a comedic spin on the robbery.  The clown robbers take turns killing each other to get a bigger share on the loot throughout the robbery itself as advised by the Joker before the actual heist.  It’s a brilliant tactic to use against greedy fools.  The clown thugs don’t know that the Joker is actually with them and he ends up killing everyone in a clown mask.  I do admire the life threatening risks the Joker takes to see how far he can go leading such a life.  A man in the bank also stands up to the clown robbers, specifically the hidden Joker; he fires off some shotgun rounds killing one of them.  The Joker injures him and reveals his real face while escaping in a school bus strategically crashed into the bank.  The getaway is slick and just in the realm of not totally unbelievable, well I liked it anyway.

Harvey Dent is the man with a plan to take down the mob.  He has his life severely threatened in a courtroom case; it’s a solid intro type scene for the character.  Gordon approaches Dent in an offer to help rid the mob from Gotham, which is just Chicago I do miss that imaginative Tim Burton created Gotham but that’s for another review.  Dent accuses Gordon of having paid off cops in his private unit while Gordon denies working with the Batman.  I tell you the entire “corrupted by mob” aspect of this movie goes to extreme situations that are used for excuses on anything, it gets overdone.  Dent wants to meet the Batman when Gordon insists Batman is to be arrested on sight, nice lie there it’s not even convincing ha-ha.  Rachel Dawes is dating Dent.

Enter the Joker – BEST scene in this movie
The best scene without a shadow of a doubt is when the Joker barges in on the “group therapy session” the mobsters are having with Lau their “trusted” accountant.  It’s hilarious as the Joker makes fun of them for being cowards and fearful of the Batman.  Gambol is the one mobster who is not buying into the Joker and wants him killed.  The Joker dispatches of his goon with a “magic trick”.  The sheer dominant display of the Joker in this scene is powerful considering the company of high level mobsters he’s with.  He offers to kill Batman for half of their money.  He makes note that Lau can be caught, even while in Hong Kong, saying Batman has no boundaries.  The Joker is crafty and smart while ignoring Gambol calling him crazy.  The Joker denying that is perfectly performed by Ledger.  The Joker has grenades inside his classic purple jacket and warns the mobsters to think about his offer as he exits in commanding fashion.

Batman, Gordon and Dent all meet on the rooftop with the bat signal with a circling camera shot, ahh I hate that!  It’s so “amateurish” to circle around like that, I loathe it and make it well known that I despise it.  So, Batman decides to go to Hong Kong to bring Lau back for his spankings.  A lot of people want to lay a hand on that accountant let me tell you, he’s a calculator thief!  Meanwhile the Joker takes another one of those risks I like by faking his own death to gain access to Gambol’s secure hideout.  He didn’t appreciate having a bounty on his head so he took the fight to Gambol.  The Joker goes over his first story of, “Do you want to know how I got these scars?”  What a great icebreaker for any conversation!  He kills Gambol and forces some of his men to join him.  Ruthless maniac!  The times seem to be riding high for Dent, Gotham’s white knight, as he puts away a sizable portion of the mobsters thanks to Lau’s cooperation.  How did Lau get back to Gotham you wonder, well Batman went all the way to Hong Kong to bring his corrupt behind back.  It’s an incredible capture scene as Batman “flies” into action like a real winged terror; I’ll admit it’s cool to see him gliding through the night skies in Hong Kong.  He crashes directly onto the floor Lau is hiding on and one of those silly action sequences occur as Batman never catches a bullet and all the bad guys drop like flies.  The escape is neat as Batman catches a ride onto an airplane he set up to carry him away with Lau.  Now Batman is taking life threatening Joker type risks which is interesting.  The Joker was right, Batman has no jurisdiction.

Dent is warned by the mayor that if he slips up and is found to be corrupt in any way then the mob will go free bringing crime right back.  The mob eventually hires the Joker to kill Batman and he begins right away.  The Joker kills one of the copycats and puts a video on the news for Batman to reveal himself or people will die.  Bruce Wayne is now learning how demented the Joker is.  A judge, commissioner and Dent are all targets of the Joker.  He blows up the judge using the “corrupt cops” of course.  Money is the root of all evil they say.  The Joker has enough to bend the will of almost any man at this point.  The commissioner dies drinking toxic liquor, that moment is a bit sketchy.  How do you not know it’s toxic as its steaming like acid after it spills on the table.  It’s part of the entire “too elaborate” deal I mentioned earlier.  Did “corrupt cops” again do this to their own commissioner?  Are they that greedy or in such an impossible situation to turn on him?  It leaves far too much to question if you ask me.

Bruce Wayne throws a fundraiser for Dent on the night all these killings are occurring, good timing Joker.  Bruce knocks Dent out and hides him as the Joker crashes the fundraiser party in brute style with some of the “corrupt cops” on site.  The Joker truly shows that he really is crazy as he says how beautiful Rachel is in front of everyone.  The camera is doing that spinning thing again, ahh!  Batman shows up and a better action sequence takes place as the Joker gets in on the action.  Rachel eventually gets in the grasp of the Joker and held out of a window.  I love the blind gunshot the Joker does to blast the window out.  “Let her go!”  Batman yells as the Joker releases her out the window saying, “Poor choice in words.”  Batman dives out of this high rise building while catching Rachel and they land on a car completely unscathed!  Time-out, how are they not dead from that height?  Not even an injury occurs for either of them, it’s one of the most questionable scenes in the entire movie and gets brushed off as an everyday occurrence people always walk away from.  It’s like office talk the next day in Gotham as people discuss how they jumped from a hundred stories up so they could catch a cab!  Unless I missed something it’s awful indeed.

The Joker reveals the mayor being his next target and the reeling good guys have no choice but to go all out to protect him.  It’s here that Alfred tells his story to Bruce Wayne about how he once was trying to catch a man who simply wanted to watch the world burn.  It comes as a surprise to Bruce as he keeps assuming the Joker wants something.  It’s a better moment in the movie as you finally get some insight as to what the Joker is all about.  At a parade the mayor has a public appearance which I don’t know why he would make clearly knowing Joker has it out for him.  With plenty of people and guns everywhere why be foolish enough to leave protective custody?  Oh, because he knows all the cops are corrupt anyway so why hid when that’s no safer than being out in the open right?  The Joker is in disguise as an honor guard or something near the mayor without his trademark clown paint on.  He gets a shot off at the mayor that Gordon takes in the back as he lunges to protect the mayor.  The Joker escapes of course since the crowd panics and causes a frenzy for him to slip away.  It’s another wild risk by the Joker that I like.  Gordon for all intensive purposes is now dead and Batman sulks heavily for it.  He wants to quit being Batman and has a pity party over it but Alfred straightens him out enough by finishing the story he told earlier.  They had to burn down the entire forest to catch him which probably is the result the man in the story wanted.

Bruce plans to turn himself into the police to meet the Joker’s demands.  Dent opposes it strongly though.  Rachel and Bruce have a heart to heart about being together and Bruce tells her he is turning Gotham over to Dent.  It’s a silly love angle that is really a waste of time in the overall aspect.  At a press conference Dent tries to convince everyone to support Batman now to catch the Joker then handle Batman later for his crimes.  It ends with Dent saying that he is “the Batman” so he gets taken to jail.  The next scenes are car chase material which you all know I love so much, detecting sarcasm yet?  An armored truck, with a mysterious man driving concealed head to toe, heads out with Dent in the back.  It was broad daylight when Dent revealed he was Batman then night when he was being taken away.  I don’t know.

A fire truck is on fire blocking the top side streets.  Let’s pause a moment there to wonder how the Joker pulled that off.  He has corrupt firemen now in his pocket?  How nuts would a fireman have to be to set fire to a rescue truck and place it blocking the road like that?  The questions are mounting as the wheels are falling off a bit here in the movie.  The armored truck detours underneath in the tunnel and the action boom boom begins.  It’s nothing spectacular as the explosions go off and no lead character meets his demise.  The chase goes back topside where Batman catches up to the Joker in his semi-truck.  Batman now on a motorcycle does manage to create a nifty finale to the chase by using cables to cause the semi-truck to flip straight over crashing to a stop.  How the Joker walks away from it are unknown to me, I guess he was wearing his safety seat-belt.  An epic Batman vs. Joker standoff occurs as Batman avoids running over the Joker, why?  Finish him off, why let him survive?  He is just going to continue his sinister ways if left alive.  It makes little sense, I always hate when characters get put in situations to finally do something only to break off and prolong the moment.

The Joker excitedly walks up to Batman as he lay on the ground after his crash.  Surprise, Gordon busts the Joker in a twist that he wasn’t dead!  I don’t understand this one either, how did he recover so quickly or did body armor absorb the previous bullet?  Questions continue to mount don’t they?  The Joker gets jailed at Gordon’s special unit cell.  Rachel and Dent after the confusion and craziness of the night’s events get taken by “corrupt cops” yet again to unspecified locations.  They are also separated and no one knows they’re missing.  It becomes questioning time for the Joker as Batman begins his fearsome interrogation.  It’s an interesting scene for the two as the Joker tries to explain to Batman how they are viewed as freaks to the people living within the world of “rules”.  I do believe the Joker makes intelligent believable statements that get Batman furious.  The Joker does take quite a beating that seems unlikely, but he eventually tells where Dent and Rachel are in a tricky type of way.  He’s so devious it’s quite admirable I’ll say.

Off to the rescue Batman heads to rescue Rachel, his love.  Gordon and his “corrupt crew” head for Dent or so they think.  Joker switched where the two captives were located to Batman, so bad!  Dent and Rachel are tied to chairs, at their respective locales, with enough gasoline to blow up the entire buildings they’re in.  The Joker likes overkill.  So Batman shows up to see Dent as Dent screams he didn’t want to be rescued but Rachel instead.  Everyone really wants to save her, huh?  Gordon arrives to an exploding building as Rachel perishes in the flames.  Batman saves Dent as half of his FACE catches fire.  The Joker meanwhile talks some trash to a cop in the interrogation room which is so bad the cop tries to beat the crap out of the Joker.  The Joker apparently bests him while demanding his simple phone call he uses to detonate a phone bomb inside the jail cell.  He escapes with Lau as the Joker takes charge of the situation.

A weenie employee of Wayne enterprises, Coleman Reese, goes to the media as he thinks he knows Batman’s true identity.  You’d sell out your own employer?  You’re so fired!  The Joker doesn’t like the idea of that as he wants Batman to turn himself in willingly.  He decides to threaten to blow up a hospital unless Reese is killed, where does he get means to wire an entire hospital with bombs?  He seems to be able to do such incredible tasks so easily all the time.  It’d be neat to know exactly how he did it, a “corrupt doctor” who takes a pay day in exchange to terminate all his terminal patients?  The questions build.  Gordon sets out to rescue Reese from the gathering mob of people trying to put a cap in him!  The Joker pays a visit to Dent to turn him into a reckless vengeful killing machine.  How the Joker makes it into an evacuating hospital is odd but he’s a slippery fellow isn’t he?  The Joker takes another insane risk by letting a coin flip decide his fate as Dent gives into the rage of blood.  Dent uses his double-sided coin and it would seem Joker got lucky as he survives.  Was the gun loaded though?

Dent goes after one of the mobsters and gets into a car with him.  The mobster tells Dent who the corrupt cops are and Dent flips his “fair trial” coin.  The mobster gets lucky but his driver doesn’t as Dent shoots him in the back of the head as the car flips end over end.  Dent is fine though somehow!  How does he survive something like that?  He doesn’t even get injured!  He continues on killing more people involved in the corruption.  Meanwhile the Joker blows up the hospital anyway and takes a bus of hostages.  Again how does he do that?  “Corrupt bus drivers”??  The ridiculous events begin to pile up as the elaborate length of the movie forces such occurrences.

We’re finally approaching the end as Bruce Wayne unveils his sonar cell phone machine to Lucious at Wayne tower.  Lucious says, “This is wrong.”  A well performed and delivered line by Morgan Freeman.  Bruce is desperate to find the Joker and invades the privacy of Gotham to do it.  The Joker’s last attempt to cause chaos involves two ships.  For some reason one of the ship’s is filled with prisoners!  We must save the criminals!  Gordon is afraid the Joker will use them to control the city but to sacrifice a ship full of innocent people instead is uncanny.  The idea is both ships are filled with explosives, yawn of course, and one ship must blow up the other testing the morale of the people on board.  Let’s take a vote!  Batman tracks down the Joker with the help of Lucious and determines the Joker using the hostages as apparent clown masked thugs.  Batman along with a S.W.A.T. team go into the building for an iffy action sequence that is dark and a bit difficult to follow overall.  It’s too over thought for its own good.

The ships refuse to blow each other up as Batman defeats the Joker in a less than epic finale for them.  Dent is all that’s left as he captures Gordon’s family.  Gordon, Batman and Dent all go at it in the final, final finale.  Dent dies as Batman knocks him off the side of a ledge.  He dies from that?  He survived far worse earlier.  Gordon and Batman decide to blame Batman for all of Dent’s actions to keep him the pure hero of Gotham.  The city now turns on Batman as he decides to make the decisions that no one else can make as he becomes the dark knight.

I rag on the movie but it’s still enjoyable in the end.  Heath Ledger gives the worthy performance to save this movie.  If you like Batman you’ll gush your heart out and pee your pants over this movie but I’m not a true BatFan.  It’s a good sequel and what more could you ask for right?
